Utah, Colorado (just a bit), New Mexico

Wednesday October 10

We left Moab as the sun was lighting up the Western faces of the cliffs that surround it.

We drove through some incredible landscapes.

In 1962 my family and I went on a trip from Denver to Yellowstone. I remember really liking the brontosaurus on the Sinclair gas station signs.

We drove to the Colorado border and cut through the Southwestern corner of that state.

In New Mexico we drove past Shiprock.

We stayed in Albuquerque with Anna who was Chantal's student when she fisrt started working as a teacher. Anna is second-generation Latvian and is committed to preserving her Latvian identity. We learned a lot about Latvia under the Soviet Union and after liberation in 1989.

Idaho, Utah

Tuesday October 9

After visiting Craters of the Moon at the end of the day in quite a stiff breeze we drove to Pocatello, Idaho, for the night. The town of Pocatello is named after an Indian chief who fought for his people during that period in the 19th century when the United States were determined to finish with the Indians one way or the other.

In the morning we drove into Utah.

Then the "MAINT REQD" light went off on our dashboard and we felt a wave of panic. We read the manual and called our mechanic in Silver Spring. Turns out that after driving for 5,000 miles a car needs an oil change. So we got an oil change at Walmart in Perry, Utah.

This was the view from the Walmart oil change place.

We drove through the endless conurbation that extends from Ogden through Salt Lake City to Provo and beyond. You might catch a glimpse of the lake in one of the pictures below.

After we got off I-15 we drove through beautiful country.

Craters of the Moon

Monday October 8

We drove through South Eastern Oregon, which seems to have a lot of cows and sheep and goats.

The last county we drove through in Oregon was called Malheur County. This caught our attention, since "malheur" in French means "unhappiness".

We drove by the Snake river.

Crossed into Idaho.

Some things in the West are just bigger.

IMG_1333.jpg

We saw an entire freight train full of potatoes.

Then we got to Craters of the Moon National Monument.

Washington, Oregon

Sunday October 8

We decided to do a detour via Mt. Rainier. It turns out that lots of people like to do this on a 3-day weekend, so we had company, but nothing like summer crowds.
IMG_1191.jpg

On the way we went through some pretty dense forest.
