We started out on a glorious Sunday morning. Up 270 and into the hills of Western Maryland, the blue sky filled with interesting-shaped white clouds casting shadows on the landscape. The leaves were starting to turn. The hills kept rolling through South-Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia, then evened out into a flat plain once we entered Ohio. I think we should expect a lot of flat until we hit the Rockies.
Because we've been in Maryland ever since we started living in the US we have a European sense of the size of the land. Just like in Europe, when you drive for an hour or two in any direction in Maryland you cross through different ecosystems (floodplain, coastal plain, piedmont, "mountain"). One of the reasons we're going on this trip is to get a sense of the continental scale of the features in this country.
We arrived at our friend Celeste's just in time for dinner with relatives and friends. We had a warm time catching up with old friends.
