Texas, Louisiana

Monday October 15

We got lost leaving Austin. The GPS got confused and sent us to San Antonio (South) instead of Houston (East). We had told it we were going to Lafayette, Louisiana.

Still cruising along at 75-80 miles an hour,
IMG_2156.jpg
we drove past a lot of ranches.

Drove by downtown Houston.

We were very excited that Louisiana greeted us in French.

We decided to take a detour and go see the Gulf of Mexico.

We discovered that we needed to take a ferry, but fortunately we arrived just as it was about to leave.

Once we were in Lafayette we went out to dinner at Randol's,

a place that features Cajun specialties (we had alligator and crawfish) and live dancing. We got to enjoy watching local couples dance to Cajun music.

Sunday October 14

Austin is a fabulous young and vibrant city.

Kat and her roommate Tara have a couple of cats.
Micah,

and Prince.

It was fun to watch Kat play with them.

Kat took us to the Uncommon Objects store,

and to a great Mexican restaurant.

We saw some great artisans

and enjoyed some great music.

No matter how warm it gets (90 degrees today), lots of women here wear boots

or interesting clothes.

Driving to Austin, Texas

Saturday October 13

The land between Sweetwater, where we spent the night, and Austin was surprisingly green after all the parched land we had crossed since leaving Maryland.

IMG_2024.jpg

There were lots of ranches.

We were surprised to see flowers in mid-October.

Duncan examined a tree (very common in the area, maybe a live oak?)

while Chantal admired a grasshopper on our windshield.

In Austin we're staying with our old friend Kat whom we first met when Chantal was her Kindergarten teacher.

New Mexico, Texas

Friday October 12

Anna and Chantal, just before our departure.
IMG_1968.jpg

As we were leaving Albuquerque in the morning Christophe (our son) and his friend Matt were flying to Phoenix to load up a U-Haul truck and drive it back to Maryland. We'll be driving in parallel, they through the middle of the country, we through the South.

For the first time since Indiana we encountered rain.

IMG_1979.jpg

Right after we crossed the border into Texas,
IMG_1990.jpg
we got a flat tire. We pulled over and started the process of taking off the wheel and putting on the spare. A nice man with a Spanish accent stopped and gave us a hand. Fortunately he had an air compressor and a power tool for removing the lugs, because of course they were so tight that we couldn't have gotten them off with te rinky-dinky wrench that comes with the car's tool set.

A highway maintenance truck pulled over too and remained with us with his lights on to protect us from oncoming traffic.

Despite the bad experience of getting a flat as soon as we entered Texas we got a very good first impression of Texans.

There was a tire store in town so we were able to get the tire replaced.
IMG_1992.jpg

This is the damage and what caused it.
IMG_1993.jpg
IMG_1996.jpg

We saw our first cotton plant.
IMG_1999.jpg

According to Wikipedia the Lubbock area "is the largest contiguous cotton-growing region in the world".
IMG_2002.jpg

We saw lots and lots of these contraptions. Can anybody tell us what they are?

Albuquerque

Thursday October 11

We drove to Santa Fe along Route 14. We saw the quaint towns of Madrid (pronnounced MA-drid) and Cerillos.

IMG_1885.jpg

Santa Fe struck us a little like Disneyland. It's full of expensive shops. Also lots and lots of art galleries and craft stores. We went to the Georgia O'Keefe museum.

We spent another lovely evening with Anna catching up with each other. Anna wished us good night ("ar labu nakti") and sweet dreams ("saldu dusu") in Latvian.
